Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose the best type for me?
Think about how often you will want to wear contact lenses, and your budget. Our team will be happy to give you more information about the types of contact lenses for your vision problem.
Is it safe to wear contact lenses?
Contact lens wear is very safe for people of all ages providing you follow the guidelines on wearing time, cleanliness and aftercare. Newer types of soft contact lenses are safe for longer wearing times. We are always here to advise you during practice hours.
I tried contact lenses and couldn't get on - should I try again?
Nowadays there are new products which are more comfortable to use, and a wider range of vision problems can be corrected using contact lenses. Modern cleaning solutions for contact lenses are simpler to use and more comfortable. So successful wear is possible for many more people.
Are they difficult to put in?
You will need to practice the techniques for inserting and removing the lenses before taking them home. We will give you one to one tuition to get you off to a good start.
Can I swim in them?
Contact lenses can be contaminated by pool or sea water, and easily lost, so don't swim in contact lenses unless you are wearing watertight goggles.
Can I sleep in them?
There are certain types of soft contact lens which are suitable for overnight wear. Ask our optometrists when you come for your eye examination for more information on this option.
My glasses are varifocals. Would I be able to wear contact lenses?
Yes there are options for near and far with all types of contact lens.
Why do people choose daily contact lenses - it seems wasteful?
Many people choose daily contact lenses because they are comfortable and convenient. Wearing fresh lenses every day keeps vision clear, is hygienic and healthy for your eyes, and there are no cleaning solutions to buy. They are great for occasional wear, and travel. Worn every day, they will cost a little more, but around the same as a capuccino or glass of wine!
How do I get started?
The first step is to come in for an eye examination so that we have your up to date prescription. You can discuss options with the optometrist, and book a fitting appointment when you will be able to try the lenses. Several appointments are needed during the first three months of wear. Afterwards, aftercare is usually once or twice yearly to check vision, comfort and eye health.
Price Guide for Contact Lenses at Sherratt Opticians
To get started with any type of contact lens, you will need a fitting appointment with the optometrist to try the lens on the eye. If you are wearing contact lenses for the first time, or are changing to another type of contact lens, you will also need a teaching session to learn how to handle the lenses, and to look after them. During the first three months, up to three follow up appointments will be needed to ensure that the lenses are suitable for your eyes. The cost of this professional service is called the fitting fee and is included in the 'get started' cost below. After the initial fitting period, aftercare visits will be advised by the optometrist once or twice yearly. Paying for your lenses on a monthly standing order in our SuperVision programme means that the cost of aftercare is included.
